How To Choose The Right Prescription Eyeglasses

There are so many options these days when it comes to eyeglasses. For many, it is a fashion statement, while for others it is simply a medical device. Whichever it may be for you, learn what you should know the next time you choose your next pair of prescription eyeglasses!

Learn About Your Lenses Before Choosing a Frame

The first step in choosing a frame is knowing what type of lenses you require. For example, someone who is very near-sighted (i.e. someone whose vision is clearer up close than further away) will have lenses that are thinner at the center and thicker at the edges. A larger frame will highlight the thicker edges and therefore isn’t the most suitable frame choice. However, this problem can be easily solved by choosing frames that are narrower or opting for high-index frames, which are made thinner and lighter than other lens materials. The next time you are updating your lenses, speak to your optometrist about what frames are most suitable for you.

What Activities Will You Be Doing?

Someone who is primarily using their prescription eyeglasses for working and works on a computer for most of their day will want to ensure they are getting glasses with a blue light coating. A blue light blocking filter can help reduce excessive blue light and keep your eyes healthy. On the other hand, if you are a parent purchasing glasses for your child, an anti-scratch coating can help ensure that rough play, which could result in scratches, doesn’t interfere with your child’s vision. In addition to selecting lens coatings that best fit your lifestyle, it’s important to consider the material of your eyeglasses/lenses.

Know Your Face Shape

Just because your favorite celebrity is wearing gorgeous round frames, that doesn’t mean they will necessarily look the same on you. It’s important to consider your face shape when choosing eye-wear. Which face shape do you have: round, oval, square, heart, or triangle? For example, someone with a square face shape should look for frames that are more round or cat-eye shaped. These frame shapes can help soften features and help accentuate the eyes. Learn more about your face shape if you can.

With this being said, keep in mind these are guidelines – there can be exceptions. The best way to see if a frame looks good on you is to try them out! So keep them in mind, but don’t let them stop you from trying on a variety of frames. Keep looking until you find the your dream frames. You’ll get there eventually!
