Night Driving – I Just Can’t See!

driving at night

For many of us, we get just a peep of light (if we are lucky) when driving to work. But, when heading home it’s usually pitch dark! With the added winter weather elements, night driving is tough for even the most experienced drivers. Driving safely should be a priority for all of us, so this week’s article is dedicated to helping you see better at night.

For many parts of the Island, it snowed this week. Causing major headaches for many drivers. Although, it doesn’t snow a whole lot in Victoria downtown, many of us in our early 40’s do have a tough time driving at night. A common complaint I hear from patients during the winter months. Some simple tips can help protect you and your loved ones.

Tips For Better Night Driving

  1. Ensure you can see and you have no eye health issues. Dr. Sharma stresses the importance of seeing your eye doctor regularly for a comprehensive eye exam. If you can’t see clearly, or have an underlying eye condition which is preventing you from seeing clearly, driving at night just isn’t safe.
  2. Ask your optometrist about anti-reflective eyeglass coatings, which can help reduce night glare. Those who wear contacts can also seek similar contact lenses.
  3. If you work on a computer all day at your job, use the 20-20-20 rule to keep your eyes from becoming dry/strained.
  4. Use eye drops to help lubricate tired eyes at the end of the work day.
  5. Allow extra time on your way back home. This is a hard one to swallow, because let’s face it, we all want to get home as soon as we can. But, mentally allowing yourself that extra time can really help you to physically drive safely.
  6. Brr it is cold out! This means if you park your car outside, there’s likely frost on your windshield. Ensure all windows and mirrors are clean and clear.
  7. Keep your car service up-to-date.

Remember, if you are having a tough time seeing while driving at night, you are putting yourself, your passengers, and those on the road with you at serious risk. Please drive safely, especially this holiday season!
