UV Rays: How to Protect Your Eyes While Skiing

snowboarding on mountain

It has been somewhat of a winter wonderland for Islanders this past week (depending on your location). Although, the snow is not particularly welcomed by city folk, those who love the slopes certainly are enjoying the white stuff! Are you a skier or snowboarder? Don’t forget to protect your eyes from UV rays!

Whether you are an avid winter-sport goer or just like hitting the slopes a couple times a year, it’s important to protect your eyes. For many people, getting the latest gear is top of mind. Not the potential negative effects of UV rays! But, being on a high altitude, especially on a bright and sunny day, can really damage your eyes. Not to mention hinder your ability to see clearly. I recommend patients follow a few simple steps to ensure their eyes are protected and last them a lifetime!

Tips For Your Next Slope Run:

  1. Wear polarized lenses to help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and glare (which can be quite blinding against the white snow). The best option for complete coverage is to wear goggles – they protect against not only damaging UV rays, but particles of snow and wind. They can also be fitted with prescription lenses for those who wear glasses. Alternatively, contacts can be worn with goggles. Goggles generally also help protect against fogging, as they have a double lens!
  2. If you wear contact lenses, ensure your contacts are suitable for the dry mountain conditions. Additionally, if you don’t want the hassle of lugging solution around, wear daily disposable lenses if it’s appropriate. Your eye doctor will be able to provide you with the best breathable contact options for your eyes.
  3. Those patients with dry eyes, especially contact lens wearers, should keep drops handy to help lubricate irritated eyes.
  4. Buy eye gear prior to your trip. This way you won’t be rushed into overpaying.
  5. If you are an avid skier you may want to invest in a few different types of goggles, which allow wearers better visibility and vary depending on weather conditions. More information on this can be read here.

Don’t forget even if the sun isn’t out, your eyes are still being affected by UV rays, so it’s vital to always protect them! The next time your up on the slopes, wear the appropriate eye protection, it might just enhance your skills!
