Hyperopia (Farsightedness)
Hyperopia, commonly known as farsightedness, occurs when nearby objects appear blurry while distance vision may remain clear. It happens because of how light enters the eye, rather than a structural problem with the retina itself. This common refractive error is easily managed and corrected by an optometrist. Without correction, it can cause significant eye strain and discomfort during daily tasks like reading or using screens.
What Causes Hyperopia?
Hyperopia occurs when the eye’s shape prevents light from bending (refracting) properly onto the retina. Ideally, the cornea and lens work together to focus light precisely on the retina at the back of the eye. In farsightedness, this process is slightly off, causing light to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it.
This typically happens for one of two reasons:
- The eyeball is shorter than average from front to back (decreased axial length).
- The cornea is too flat, changing how much light is bent when entering the eye.
Hyperopia often has a genetic component; if one or both parents are farsighted, children are more likely to be as well. Correcting vision early in childhood is important to support healthy visual development and prevent long-term issues like amblyopia (lazy eye).
Symptoms of Farsightedness
While hyperopia itself isn’t painful, uncorrected vision can lead to noticeable strain, particularly when focusing on near tasks. As we age, the eyes naturally lose some flexibility, often making farsighted symptoms more noticeable in our 30s and beyond.
Common signs include:
- Blurry vision at close range
- Eye strain or fatigue after reading or screen use
- Headaches (often around the temples)
- Dull ache behind the eyes
- Squinting to see clearly up close

Treatment & Management for Hyperopia
Farsightedness is safely corrected using several approaches, ranging from everyday eyewear to permanent surgical options:
Prescription Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses
The most common and accessible treatment is a prescription for glasses or contacts. These lenses are designed to bend light correctly before it enters the eye, providing immediate, clear vision at all distances. Modern lens designs can also account for astigmatism or presbyopia if needed.
Laser Vision Correction
For those seeking a long-term reduction in dependence on glasses or contacts, laser refractive surgery may be an option. Procedures like LASIK use a laser to gently reshape the cornea so light focuses precisely on the retina. Not everyone is a candidate due to corneal thickness and overall eye health.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
RLE involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure is often recommended for patients over 40 or those with high hyperopia, as it can simultaneously correct farsightedness and prevent future cataracts.
