Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine is an advanced diagnostic technology that allows for non-invasive comprehensive retinal imaging in both 2D and 3D. Using light waves, the different cross sections of the eye can be mapped and measured. The ability to see the different layers of the retina and their thickness, instead of just the surface, improves early diagnosis greatly, because issues can be identified before symptoms are even present.

What kinds of eye diseases and eye conditions can the OCT detect?

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic related eye diseases
  • Age related macular degeneration
  • Macular holes
  • Macular edema
  • Macular pucker
  • Optic nerve related issues
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Retinal detachments
  • Hereditary retinal eye diseases

What happens during the OCT portion of my eye exam?

You will be asked to rest your head on a support while the OCT machine examines your eyes. During this time nothing ever touches your eyes as the process is completely non-invasive. If your pupils are too small, you may require dilating drops.

At Inner Harbour Optometry we are always striving to provide our patients with the best. Because we know when it comes to your eyes early detection is key. With the OCT’s specialized technology and ability to track changes over time, issues can be identified sooner and treated with a greater chance of success. We are happy to provide our patients with this advanced care. Want to know more? Give us a call.
